Dr Mariya enjoys working with patients to improve their oral health, as well as helping patients to feel comfortable in the dental chair. She has provided dentistry to children in care through a Flexi contract; working to reduce anxiety, get children out of pain, and helping them to achieve a healthier mouth.
Dr Mariya has a keen interest in dental research and has been involved in multiple research projects over the last 7 years. She is passionate about bridging the gap between public understanding of dental problems and the simple, effective steps that can prevent them.
Through education and outreach, she aims to empower patients with the knowledge they need to take control of their oral health.
Knowledge and skills
Dr Mariya graduated from the University of Leeds with a Distinction. She has been involved in an award-winning dental enrichment program working with Leeds Dental Institute, as a Raised in Yorkshire Research Fellow, carrying out dental research in schools; monitoring oral health, dental anxiety and tooth brushing behaviour.
Due to her commitment to research over the last few years, Dr Mariya has had a special mention in Child of the North 2024 Campaign – Report 8 ‘An evidence-based plan for improving children’s oral health with and through education settings’ (page 26).
Dr Mariya has volunteered as a part of OpenWide to attend schools in West Yorkshire and educate sixth formers on sugar awareness and toothbrushing in order to inform school students from deprived backgrounds about good oral hygiene.
Awards and charity work
Dr Mariya is travelling to Namibia with Mobile Smiles charity to deliver free dental care to some of the most impoverished communities in the country who do not have access to a dentist.
She will be going to remote areas, offering relief from pain, infection, and untreated dental conditions that have gone on for years without care.
