Questions & Answers

Gum disease treatment FAQs

Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place. It’s primarily caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on your teeth. In its early stage, gingivitis, you might notice red, swollen, or bleeding gums.

If left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, where the gums pull away from the teeth, forming pockets that become infected. This can damage the bone and connective tissue that support your teeth, eventually leading to tooth loss.

Treatment is crucial to stop the progression of the disease, save your teeth, and improve your overall oral and even general health.

  • Bleeding gums: Especially when brushing or flossing.
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums.
  • Persistent bad breath.
  • Receding gums: Teeth may appear longer.
  • Loose teeth: In more advanced stages.
  • Puss between your teeth and gums.
  • Changes in the way your teeth fit together when you bite.

The type of treatment depends on the severity of the gum disease. Treatment may involve deep cleaning (scaling and root planing), or surgical treatments like bone grafts or soft tissue grafts in case of advanced periodontitis.

While the damage caused by advanced gum disease often cannot be fully reversed, with consistent treatment and diligent home care, the progression of the disease can be halted and managed effectively.

Most non-surgical treatments like scaling and root planing are performed under local anesthetic to ensure your comfort. You might experience some sensitivity or mild discomfort afterward, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Surgical procedures are also done with local anesthetic, and your dentist will provide post-operative care instructions and pain management advice.

  • Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss daily to remove plaque and food particles between teeth.
  • Use an antiseptic mouthwash if recommended by your dentist.
  • Eat a balanced diet and limit sugary snacks.
  • Avoid smoking and chewing tobacco, as these significantly increase your risk of gum disease.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and professional cleanings, typically every six months, or more frequently if advised.
